Turn back the clock with Fraxel

Many of us would like to stop time when it comes to ageing. Those tell tale lines and wrinkles, pigmentation, lax skin and a lacklustre and dull, tired complexion can affect our self esteem and make us look much older than we feel. For many of us, invasive surgery is not the answer and we reach out for alternative, non-surgical treatments with minimal discomfort and downtime.

At the Rejuvenation Clinic & Medispa, Dr. Luca Russo offers Fraxel skin rejuvenation to his patients and the clinic has been a centre of excellence for this treatment since 2005. The clinic is one of only two clinics in the UK to offer the full family of Fraxel laser treatments and these include Fraxel Repair, Fraxel Restore and Fraxel Dual.

Fractal Fractional laser treatment works by targeting both the epidermis and dermis. It does this by delivering a laser beam that is divided into thousands of tiny but deep columns of treatment into the skin. These are called microthermal treatment zones (MTZs). Within each MTZ old epidermal pigmented cells are expelled and penetration of collagen in the dermis causes a reaction that leads to collagen remodeling and new collagen formation. By using MTZs, the laser targets and treats intensively within the zone whilst surrounding healthy tissue remain intact and unaffected and helps heal the wound. This fractional treatment results in a faster healing process than if all tissue in the treatment area was exposed to the laser.

Prior to treatment a topical anesthetic gel will be applied and left on for 45 minutes. After which another gliding gel acts as a lubricant for the robotic hand piece that glides across your skins’ surface. Treatment time will depend on the areas being treated, but a full face will take around 20 to 30 minutes. The discomfort associated with the procedure is dependent on the energy delivered to the treatment site, however, the anesthetic minimizes this discomfort considerably, thus making treatment tolerable. A cooling device, called a Zimmer™ machine, is used to reduce the discomfort during the procedure.

After the procedure the gliding gel will be washed off and you may experience a mild sunburn sensation for about an hour after the procedure. You may also experience some swelling but this is usually minim and should resolve in 2-3 days. Your skin will experience a pinkish tone for around 3-5 days but you are able to cover this using a concealing makeup.

Within 24 hours new epidermal skin develops and the skin will have a bronze appearance that can last between 3-14 days. Flaking of the skin may also occur as new skin replaces dead skin tissue. This can be treated with a moisturising cream. You will be advised not to go in to the sun for at least 4 weeks post procedure and to wear a high factor, broad spectrum sun protection for 8 weeks following treatment.

You may be required to have several treatments, however, Dr. Russo specializes in obtaining fast results with as little as one treatment. This will all be discussed with Dr. Russo upon consultation so your expectations are clearly defined and explained.
